Unpleasant Motives
2023
“The unpleasant motive is the foundation of forgetfulness."
After visiting several mobile phone repair shops, it was found that 90% of phone damage is caused by human error—often accompanied by arguments and trust crises. Once repaired in these shops, phones are taken away, leaving behind discarded back covers. These covers lay silently in the shops for years until I collected them.
The work features irregular up-and-down movements generated by motors, with piano strings and springs connecting the damaged phone covers to simulate repeated dropping motions. Mirrors are placed on the ground, covered with magnetic tape reels and numerous damaged phone backs for audience interaction.
The abandoned covers repeatedly hit the ground, stubbornly, bravely, passionately, and anxiously repeating the cycle.
The work has been selected for the exhibition hosted by UCCA ( UCCA Center for Contemporary Art ) and XINTIANDI, SHANGHAI.
